En dan dat accent - zo leuk. Heel anders dan het Amerikaans dat wij van tv gewend zijn.

Wij gaan dan wel niet zelf rijden maar veel van deze weetjes zijn toch handig.

Zo krijgen we ook een voorproefje wat ons te wachten staat.

Getting to know me

Well, to date I have told you I was born in Te Awamutu New Zealand. That my mum, Mieke van Beek and I are off Down Under early next year so I can acquaint myself with my country of birth. I also hope to meet some of my relatives who live there.

I have also mentioned I work at a butchery. I love my job - the customers are great and my boss, well he is super.

I have a few likes and dislikes - but I just want to fill you in on one of my passions - my vege garden! We call them MOESTUIN- or in English I believe it is an allotment.

There are many reasons for me to like what I do. My boys get to learn all about growing stuff and how to treat the soil etc. They get introduced to and taste fresh produce - a change from tinned, frozen or dried. I still perserve when the yield is in full swing. That helps the food budget AND we get to eat our own produce all year round ( well almost).

It is a real family affair. The men and their extra energy help me regularly and we have fun while doing it.

Here in Nederland we have lots of allotments all over the place- like a mini community. Mainly huddled together in a mini vege garden village situation. Little garden houses or sheds in which the tools, a couple of deck chairs and possibly a sun umbrella are kept. Many stay a while - relaxing in the sun and enjoying the smell of fresh air, fresh vegetables and fruit, especially if the garden allotment is a wee way away from home. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a large garden. Some live in flats and enjoy spending their day in this manner.

So, there you have it, I grow my own vegetables and fruit and love being outdoors with my family.

Zoals jullie nu al bekend is, weten jullie dat ik in Nieuw Zeeland geboren bent, dat ik met mijn moeder Mieke van Beek, naar Nieuw Zeeland ga voor een ontdekkingsreis en hopelijk ook familieleden te ontmoeten.

Ik heb ook verteld dat ik bij een slager werk en vindt het super leuk werk.

Nu een hobby even uitleggen. Want het is niet alleen leuk, maar ook wel veel werk. Toch valt de vermoeidheid in het niets als ik in mijn keuken sta en de verse producten kan voorbereiden. Ik heb nl een Moestuin.

Ik vind het belangrijk dat mijn jongens leren over gezond eten, echte smaken en ook buiten bezig zijn. Het is echt een familie gebeuren, want zonder stoere kerels ...zou het er heel anders uit zien.

In Nederland zijn moestuinen een bekend fenomeen. Ik ben benieuwd hoe dat in Nieuw Zeeland is? Zien we daar ook van die leuke verzamelingen moestuinen zoals hier? Zullen mensen daar ook zo'n plek gebruiken om de dag door te brengen als een soort vakantie plek? Ik ben erg benieuwd hoe dat daar zo zijn gang gaat.

Ik heb het woordje wel opgezocht - Moestuin heeft diverse benamingen zoals; Vegetable patch, vegetable garden, allotment. Dus er zijn wel namen voor. Nu uitzoeken hoe die daar geregeld worden.

Ik zal er bewust op letten. Misschien kan mijn oom Wim mij daar wat meer over vertellen.

Mum and I will do our utmost to polish up our English before we depart for New Zealand. It will be so much easier if we can communicate clearly.

The thing is - there is English-English and then there is Kiwi English.

To make sure we get things right - we are practicing hard, and this helps!

I just KNOW we are going to be alright and do just fine!

Time to recap.....

Things are really taking shape. Our 'to-do list' looks more and more like a ' done deal list'.

Our newly made purchases of backpacks, sweaters and the like are neatly packed away.

The tickets bought and paid for and the scenic tour also booked and arrangements made.

To make sure we don't slip up or miss out on details, we get together regularly to discuss progress and the next decisions we have to make.

One thing we talked about at length was - "how do we recognise our luggage amongst all those coming off the plane and in the touring bus?"

So we found a solution ( we think) and purchased these lovely luggage labels

Ik ga op vakantie en ik neem mee.......

Het begint erop te lijken. Ons 'to do' lijstje wordt afgewerkt.

De aankopen zoals wat nieuwe kleding, rugzakken en handigheidjes zijn al binnen.

De tickets zijn betaald, de ontdekkingstocht ( in 8 spannende dagen ) is ook al geregeld.

We houden goed contact en er wordt regelmatig overleg gepleegd.

... en voor de veiligheid - 

hebben we ook maar besloten om bijzondere naam/adreslabels aan ons bagage te hangen.

Altijd handig als je tussen al die bagage je eigen tas kan herkennen.

Just a wee message from me: Mieke

Here some of the reactions of those around me when told of my and Veronique's impending trip to New Zealand.

I am a volunteer for the Red Cross. It involves regularly spending a week lending a helping hand at in Rheden. The hotel caters for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Volunteers like myself including professionals in the medical sphere try to make the week guests spend here as pleasant as possible, giving room for them to 'forget' a wee while about their aches and pains.  I am only to pleased to be able to be part of this great team and in a small way adding to the pleasure.

The Red Cross also have a cruise ship, the J. Henri Dunant,  available for the same purpose. It is also my privilege to occasionally be able to be onboard on some of the cruises.






Anyway, back to the comments: It is summer here, and the most frequently asked question is, " Where are you off to these holidays?" or " Are you going away at all these holidays?" And I reply by telling that Veronique and I are saving to go to New Zealand.

Most respond in awe. "All that way, such a long trip, and expensive." The most important question I get is " Why?"

I tell about my experiences, the emigration and birth of Veronique. I also explain how Veronique so badly wants to see where she was born - to actually ' get to know' her country of birth. I am also honest and tell them that it has taken me a long while to finally agree to go. And now, the decision is made, the plans have been worked out and the booking made. On the 3rd of March 2015 we embark on our mother/daughter journey.

The reactions are heartwarming. People understand, they react with comments like " good for you" and " how adventurous and daring'. They don't envy us the long flight and understand that the tickets don't come cheap. One guest even offered to ask guests to contribute. Horror, NO WAY!! I let know that that was one offer of help I didn't want, thanks all the same!

My admiration and sense of achievement is for Veronique and my tenacity and perseverance. We have saved and saved - and will continue to do so as we plan to have the

BEST  and MOST MEMORABLE MOTHER  - DAUGHTER TRIP 

EVER

Hotel De Valkenburg, Rheden

Hier wat reacties die ik krijg als mensen om mij heen horen van Veronique en mijn geplande reis naar Nieuw-Zeeland.

Ik werk vaak een weekje als vrijwilligster in Rheden in Hotel De Valkenberg. Daar waar zieke mensen vanuit allerlei verschillende hoeken van Nederland samen komen. En waar wij dan met zorg-vrijwilligers,  gastvrouwen en stagiaires er een mooie gezellige en onbezorgde week van proberen te maken.

Hier krijgen mensen de kans om een onvergetelijke tijd te beleven - even weg uit de thuis omgeving, waar hun ziekte of beperking hun leven bepaalt. Daar draag ik graag een steentje aan bij.

Naast het hotel is er ook een cruise schip, de J.Henri-Dunant. Ook daar mag ik zo af en toe meedraaien. Super leuk en gezellig.

In deze zomer periode komt de vraag: "Waar ga jij op vakantie? Of ga je niet?"

Dan antwoord ik, "Nee, dit jaar niet. Ik spaar samen met mij dochter voor een reis naar Nieuw-Zeeland".

"Wat????  Helemaal naar de andere kant van de wereld??? 

"Hoe lang is dat wel niet vliegen???"

en, "Jeetje dat zal wat kosten!!"

En ook de vraag:  "Waarom dan??"

Nou, dan vertel ik over onze emigratie en over de geboorte van dochter Veronique.

Ik zeg dat zij zo vaak heeft gevraagd, "Mam, wil je mij Te Awamutu laten zien, en dus het prachtige Nieuw-Zeeland?"

"Ja",zeg ik dan, " ik heb er lang over gedaan om ja te zeggen - maar nu is het bekend. Op 3 maart 2015 is het zo ver."

Nou en dan hoor je verschillende reacties van " oh wat leuk."

En, "Zo, dat is lang vliegen."

Ook, "Dat kost best veel geld."

Zelf hoorde ik van een gast die aangaf,  "nou ik wil wel met de pet rond hoor!"

Nee, dat wil ik ECHT niet.

Wat ben ik trots dat Veronique en ik goed gespaard hebben en nog bezig zijn, want we gaan er van genieten.

Day 7:  From Rotorua to Wellington ( 453,2 km)

After the excitement of Rotorua we travel further south to our destination - Wellington.



An early morning departure from  Rotorua as it is quite a hike traveling south to Wellington via Wairakei, Taupo, the very heart of the North Island.

Here we will stop to stretch our legs and view the mighty Huka Falls before following the eastern shoreline of Lake Taupo.




Continue through rich farming lands into the capital city Wellington.



On arrival in Wellington we will celebrate our holiday with a farewell dinner with our tour director and new-found friends in the Travel Lodge Hotel.

Day 8: Wellington

When we wake there will be an opportunity for us to explore Wellington by way of scenic tour 
We hope to take in the panoramic views from the top of Mt.Victoria by going up in the cable car.

There might be time and opportunity to explore the Parliament buildings and the Beehive, home to New Zealand's politicians. Our priority though is Te Papa.

A visit to Te Papa, New Zealand's own cultural and historical museum is on the top of our wish list. To explore the exhibits at our leisure, especially the historical level of how New Zealand took shape, including the influence of the western world - the immigrants who came seeking fortune in New Zealand.

At the end of the day we will make our way by rail to Waikanae - and look forward to being reunited with Trees and Wim.

Op naar Wellington

Dag 7:  Van Rotorua naar Wellington ( een slordige 453,2 km)

Na alle bezienswaardigheden gezien en meegemaakt te hebben in Rotorua vervolgen wij onze reis naar Wellington, de hoofdstad van Nieuw Zeeland.

We vertrekken redelijk vroeg omdat het nogal een lange rit is die wij voor de boeg hebben  naar Wellington via Wairakei, Taupo, in het hartje van het noorder eiland.


Hier maken wij even een stop om de prachtige  Huka Falls  te bezichtigen voordat we Lake Taupo passeren aan de oostkant van het meer.

We rijden langs het groen heuvelachtige landschap richting Wellington.


Aangekomen bij ons hotel Travel Lodge,Wellington nemen wij officieel afscheid van onze chauffeur, toer begeleider en de nieuwe vriendschappen die we wellicht gemaakt zullen hebben. Onze toer nadert hier zijn einde waarna onze persoonlijke reis begint.

Dag 8: Wellington

Cable Car Mt. Victoria

Na het ontbijt is er de mogelijkheid tot een ontdekkingstocht door Wellington. Op het lijstje staat in ieder geval als nummer 1. Het  Te Papa Museum. Ook zouden we graag Wellington van boven bekijken door met de kabel trein omhoog te gaan om het uitzicht te bewonderen.

Misschien dat we nog een kijkje nemen bij het parlementsgebouw de Beehive.

Er zal wel zoveel te zien zijn - dat we weer keuzes moeten maken. We moeten realistisch zijn en ons tijd goed verdelen.

Aan het einde van de dag nemen wij de trein naar  Waikanae - en zullen dan eindelijk weer herenigd worden met Trees en Wim.

Day 4: Bay of Islands-Auckland

We have the opportunity to visit the Waitangi Treaty Reserve where the Treaty was signed in 1840

In the  afternoon we can enjoy the lush farmland scenery as we return to Auckland.

Day 5: Auckland-Rotorua

After a sightseeing tour of Auckland we journey south through the Waikato area.

We get to catch a glimpse of the famous Waitomo Caves and the incredible Glow Worm Grotto with a local guide.

In the afternoon we on travel to Rotorua,

where we are given the opportunity to enjoy an evening of fun and laughter and gain an insight into traditional Maori culture. 

Followed by a Highlight Dinner at the Tamaki Family Marae.

 Day 6: Sights to see in Rotorua.

Options galore: Visit the Argodome Sheep Show for a sample of farm life.

( we chose this option - thinking it an opportunity we mustn't turn down)

Experience farm life first-hand. Enjoy genuine New Zealand hospitality this evening and spend the night with a local family on a nearby farm, including dinner. Additional cost per person. For this option please contact you travel agent or the reservations team.

So we arranged with our travel agent to spend a night at Agrodome!!

Another attraction available is a visit to Rainbow Springs Nature Park, where, with a local guide, we could discover native bush, ferm and trees that grow around the crystal clear mineral water springs

We also had the opportunity to choose: Spot a kiwi, New Zealand's national icon.

Or perhaps pay visit Te Puia for a guided tour through the geothermal valley.
